    European air quality maps 2005 including uncertainty analysis

    The objective of this report is (a) the updating and refinement of European air quality maps based on annual statistics of the 2005 observational data reported by EEA Member countries in 2006, and (b) the further improvement of the interpolation methodologies. The paper presents the results achieved and an uncertainty analysis of the interpolated maps and builds upon earlier reports from Horalék et al. (2005; 2007)

    Stable carbon and radiocarbon isotope compositions of particle size fractions to determine origins of sedimentary organic matter in an estuary

    Stable and radioactive carbon isotopic compositions of particle size fractions of a surface sediment from the Ems-Dollard estuary vary considerably with particle size. The organic material in the fine fractions (<20 µm) has considerably higher 14C values (14a~80%) than that in the coarse fractions (52%) and has higher δ13C values (average of -23‰ and -25.6‰, respectively). This shows that OM in the fine and the coarse fractions has different sources. The organic carbon in the fractions with particle sizes <20 µm is mainly imported from the North Sea. The contribution of material from the Ems river appears negligible. The carbon isotopic composition of the coarse fractions points to a terrestrial contribution. Discrete organic fragments are found of both terrestrial and marine/estuarine origin.

    Diffusion in sparse networks: linear to semi-linear crossover

    We consider random networks whose dynamics is described by a rate equation, with transition rates wnmw_{nm} that form a symmetric matrix. The long time evolution of the system is characterized by a diffusion coefficient DD. In one dimension it is well known that DD can display an abrupt percolation-like transition from diffusion (D>0D>0) to sub-diffusion (D=0). A question arises whether such a transition happens in higher dimensions. Numerically DD can be evaluated using a resistor network calculation, or optionally it can be deduced from the spectral properties of the system. Contrary to a recent expectation that is based on a renormalization-group analysis, we deduce that DD is finite; suggest an "effective-range-hopping" procedure to evaluate it; and contrast the results with the linear estimate.     Novel sol–gel preparation of (PO)–(CaO)–(NaO)–(TiO) bioresorbable glasses (X = 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15)

    Quaternary phosphate-based glasses in the PO–CaO–NaO–TiO system with a fixed PO and CaO content of 40 and 25 mol% respectively have been successfully synthesised via sol–gel method and bulk, transparent samples were obtained. The structure, elemental proportion, and thermal properties of stabilised sol–gel glasses have been characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), P nuclear magnetic resonance (P NMR), titanium K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The XRD results confirmed the amorphous nature for all stabilized sol–gel derived glasses. The EDX result shows the relatively low loss of phosphorus during the sol–gel process and Ti K-edge XANES confirmed titanium in the glass structure is in mainly six-fold coordination environment. The P NMR and FTIR results revealed that the glass structure consist of mainly Q and Q phosphate units and the Ti cation was acting as a cross-linking between phosphate units. In addition DTA results confirmed a decrease in the glass transition and crystallisation temperature with increasing NaO content. Ion release studies also demonstrated a decrease in degradation rates with increasing TiO content therefore supporting the use of these glasses for biomedical applications that require a degree of control over glass degradation.     Unipolar resistive switching in metal oxide/organic semiconductor non-volatile memories as a critical phenomenon

    Diodes incorporating a bilayer of an organic semiconductor and a wide bandgap metal oxide can show unipolar, non-volatile memory behavior after electroforming. The prolonged bias voltage stress induces defects in the metal oxide with an areal density exceeding 10(17) m(-2). We explain the electrical bistability by the coexistence of two thermodynamically stable phases at the interface between an organic semiconductor and metal oxide. One phase contains mainly ionized defects and has a low work function, while the other phase has mainly neutral defects and a high work function. In the diodes, domains of the phase with a low work function constitute current filaments. The phase composition and critical temperature are derived from a 2D Ising model as a function of chemical potential. The model predicts filamentary conduction exhibiting a negative differential resistance and nonvolatile memory behavior. The model is expected to be generally applicable to any bilayer system that shows unipolar resistive switching.     More on Multidimensional Scaling and Unfolding in R: smacof Version 2

    The smacof package offers a comprehensive implementation of multidimensional scaling (MDS) techniques in R. Since its first publication (De Leeuw and Mair 2009b) the functionality of the package has been enhanced, and several additional methods, features and utilities were added. Major updates include a complete re-implementation of multidimensional unfolding allowing for monotone dissimilarity transformations, including row-conditional, circular, and external unfolding. Additionally, the constrained MDS implementation was extended in terms of optimal scaling of the external variables. Further package additions include various tools and functions for goodness-of-fit assessment, unidimensional scaling, gravity MDS, asymmetric MDS, Procrustes, and MDS biplots. All these new package functionalities are illustrated using a variety of real-life applications

    Share of nations in 37 international public health journals : an equity and diversity perspective towards health research capacity building.

    Background: This paper contributes to further exploration of inequity in access to health research capacity development by examining the representation of different nations in international public health journals. It also aims to examine the degree of diversity that exists in these journals.Methods: This study is a descriptive survey. It was done with objective sampling on 37 ISI health journals on October of 2008.The number and nationality of people in different editorial positions of the journals was identified. The second analy­sis involved recalculating the numbers obtained for each nation to the population size of nations per million inhabitants. In order to better compare countries in terms of presence in editorial team of the journals, a ‘public health editor equity gap ratio' (PHEEGR) was developed.Results: Low income countries have occupied none of the leadership positions of chief editor or associate /assistant chief editors and middle income countries at maximum shared less than 5 percent. The PHEEGR gap in access to the different editorial positions between highest to the lowest representation of countries was 16/1 for chief editors, 12/1 for associate editors , 335/1 for editorial boards and 202/1 for associate editorial boards. However, after normalizing the data to the country's population, the gap increased significantly.Conclusion: There is an imbalance and possibly even inequity in the composition of editorial boards and offices of interna­tional health journals that should be paid significant attention. This can contribute to fill the equity gap exists between health in developing and developed countries

    Interactive Visualization of Multidimensional Feature Spaces

    Image similarity models characterize images as points in high-dimensional feature spaces. Each point is represented by a combination of distinct features, such as brightness, color histograms or texture characteristics of the image, etc. For the design and tuning of features, and thus the effectiveness of the image similarity model, it is important to understand the interrelations of individual features and the implications on the structure of the feature space. In this paper, we discuss an interactive visualization tool for the exploration of multidimensional feature spaces. Our tool uses a graph as an intermediate representation of the points in the feature space. A mass spring algorithm is used to layout the graph in a 2D space in which arrangements of similar images are attracted to each other and dissimilar images are repelled. The emphasis of the visualization tool is on interaction: users may influence the layout by interactively scaling dimensions of the feature space. In this way, the user can explore how a feature behaves in relation to other features
